MARY ANN is the remarkable story of a black abolitionist, teacher, lawyer, and the first woman to publish a newspaper in Canada. Called The Provincial Freeman, her newspaper advocated freedom and support to enslaved people escaping to Canada on the Underground Railroad. Mary Ann’s descendant, Michelle Robbins, Curator of Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, plays her in this film, one of three shorts from the Women Making History trilogy, about pioneering women from Canadian history.
